Harlem

Many movies are filmed in Harlem

When I first saw the movie set of a Spanish hood, it reminded me of my town in my country, Dominican Republic. Everything was looking similar. For example, there were BODEGAS which stands for GROCERY STORE and a LAVANDERIA which stands for LAUNDROMAT. The only differences were that the movie set had buildings and that place was representing a Puerto Rican hood with lots of Puerto Rican flags hanging from the buildings. In my country there usually are Dominican flags and houses instead. When i first saw Harlem ,there are lots of weird people there. I honestly thought Harlem was filled with garbage in the streets because of the history of that town but i was wrong because it wasn't how i thought it was going to be.There are some houses that called my attention when we was walking through the town because it also reminded me of when I used to live in a house with my family. Now that i moved and i live in a building. Harlem’s Buildings look like the capital of my country. -Xavier

Welcome to Harlem. Harlem was the home of the Harlem Renaissance back in the day. Harlem is where lots of African American groups moved to during the Great Migration from the south to escape racism. When they moved to Harlem they brought there black culture with them. Using black culture new genres emerged during the Harlem Renaissance. Like Blues and Jazz. The most famous Jazz player during that time is Louis Armstrong. He influenced people with his music and he gave white people a taste of Black culture through music. Another famous figure during this time was Langston Hughes. Through his writing he fought for equality a described Black culture.

But now Harlem has changed a lot since then. Black people don’t have to fight for equality as much now. White people now come to Harlem. Before they would not even come to Harlem. -Dillion
