Lower East Side

The Lower East Side has a lot of history in it, if you really look into it. Then you will know that the Lower East Side was a place where all immigrants would go to live because the houses were cheaper and because they wanted to start a new life. I know this because according to the article “History of the Lower East Side” on the Italian immigration part it states “By the Roaring Twenties (1920s), at least 390,000 Italians made New York City their home from East Harlem to the Lower East Side.” This means that a lot of Italian wanted to start a new life so, they moved to the Lower East Side. The article also states “Italian young men moved to America in an attempt to make and send money back to their families still living in Europe.” This means that some families needed money so the men moved to America so they make money and send it back to their families so they can help them out. The Italians weren’t the only immigrants that lived in the Lower East Side there was also the Puerto Ricans, Jewish, Chinese and etc. - Jannya H.

Hi, my name is Joselyn and I want to welcome you to our website. I hope you learn new and amazing things on our website about the lower east side. And feel like you were on this ride. Learning the history of the Lower East Side has changed the way I viewed the neighborhood, before their use to be a lot of fights, people killing each other, a lot of gangs. The living conditions were bad and everyone use to be cramped in small houses. The area was dirty with trash everywhere. Now I didn't see no gangs or violence. People are having jobs. I seen nice building, stores and restaurants. The neighborhood is crowded but it looks like everyone stay out each other way.  There were things I seen that i wouldn’t see in the bronx. For example a spot in the park where people can exercise and the park would have all the materials itself. When i went to the garden i felt like i’ve met other people who were the same race as me. It felt so different.

I saw elder chinese people play mahjong, which is like chess. That’s one thing i’ve never seen either. Some places it smelled bad. In the store Alleva Halian Food store, they gave us this cheese ball which tasted really bad. I seen stores that had chinese words. There were small streets, small buildings. A lot of different immigrants. Before we went home there was a dead end street that gangs would go and fight with guns or knives.
